Governance, 2008

Back in 2008 the BCMA – after three years of committee work – put out a set of Governance Change proposals which led to a counter-proposal by the SSPS.

As one would imagine, and setting aside whether a double-question was even in order, neither overcame the required 75%.

Together, however, they came close. Combined, 72% of the membership supported change. Five years later, neither the BCMA nor the Societies have led fundamental reform.

From the comparison document supplied by the BCMA back in 2008, the following can be noted:

Proposed by the BCMA Board (2008)

Proposed by the SSPS (2008)

  • reduce the size of the Board to 15
  • term limits of 6 years
  • reduce the size of the Board to 17
  • no “Representative Assembly”

We likewise propose a Board of 15 except that of its members, only 10 plus the chair would be voting, whereas the two CMA Delegates and two Society Presidents would continue to advise in a non-voting capacity. For the reasons why, see the FAQs.

Last year’s term limits proposal attracted inexplicable, unanimous opposition of last year’s Board.

We concur with the SSPS that, in place of defining a Representative Assembly within the bylaws, a suitable process can and should be devised drawing from the Sections.
